Special Profile
Town and Gown Salutes Dr. Arthur C. Bartner
Dr. Arthur C. Bartner occupies a unique position on the Campus of the University of Southern California. In his 42nd year as Director of the Trojan Marching Band, his time at USC has been longer than any president, trustee, dean, or football coach at the University. He has taken the Trojan Marching Band to six continents, four world expositions, and seventeen countries. The Band has earned two platinum albums with the rock group, Fleetwood Mac.
Dr. Bartner earned his Ed.D. in Music Education at the University of Michigan, and is officially a Professor of Music at USC. He has had a prominent musical career on his own, but it is his time with USC that has truly endeared him to the Trojan Family.
Dr. Bartner quite literally created “The Spirit of Troy,” which is the very familiar nickname for the fabulous Trojan Marching Band. During Dr. Bartner’s tenure, the band has increased more than fourfold. It has not missed a USC football game, away or at home, since 1987 and attends over 85 Trojan sporting events each year. Not only does it support Trojan athletics, male and female, but it has appeared in over 100 movies and television shows, marched in 16 Rose Parades and it is also the University’s goodwill ambassador to the community, the country and the world.
As members of the Trojan Family, we are so grateful to Dr. Bartner for all of the contributions he has made to Town and Gown activities through the years, and we all hope that “The Spirit of Troy,” – led by Dr. Bartner, - will always be with us.
A very enthusiastic “Fight On” goes to Dr. Arthur C. Bartner, the newest Honorary Life Member of Town and Gown!!
Education Consultant Carol Fox Named New USC Trustee (source)
Carol Campbell Fox MS ’62, an independent educational consultant and outgoing president of the USC Alumni Association, has been elected to a five-year term on the USC Board of Trustees.
“Carol has long been admired as one of the Trojan Family’s hardest-working volunteers,” said President C. L. Max Nikias in announcing Fox’s election to the board. “She has given her energy, enthusiasm and expertise to so many university organizations and programs, ranging from Town and Gown to the commemoration of USC’s 125th anniversary. I am delighted to welcome her as a member of our Board of Trustees and am confident USC will benefit greatly from her dedication to her alma mater as well as her broad experience as an educational professional.”
Fox has taught professionally at several Southern California universities - including USC and California State University, Los Angeles - and coordinated an innovative teacher-training program for UCLA Education Extension, where she also served as associate director. She has experience in educational television as a producer and on-camera talent for the Educational Television Network’s Parent Connection series.
Fox has worked in several school districts and served as a consultant for the Los Angeles County Office of Education. In addition, she was appointed by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to the Child Care Advisory Board and the Child Care Planning Council of Los Angeles County.
At her alma mater, Fox’s tenure as 2010-11 president of the USC Alumni Association Board of Governors - marking the 125th anniversary of the association’s founding - encompassed a number of milestones. She sat on the advisory committee for the inauguration of President Nikias in October 2010 and was involved with the Trojan Family Reception Tour, which introduced the new president and his wife, Niki C. Nikias, to alumni, parents and friends across the country.
Fox also took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Epstein Family Alumni Center, the association’s new headquarters in the Ronald Tutor Campus Center.
In spring 2009, Fox co-chaired the host committee of the inaugural USC Women’s Conference, which brought together nearly 400 women for a program spanning issues ranging from health to financial empowerment.
Her previous service on the USC Alumni Association Board of Governors includes terms as secretary and as chair of the board’s university 125th anniversary and history station committees. She also participated in the university-wide USC History Project.
As president of Town and Gown, USC’s largest and oldest women’s support group, from 2002 to 2004, Fox played a leadership role in the organization’s centennial celebration. She has served the group in many capacities, from helping develop its first competitive merit-based scholarships to overseeing a multimillion-dollar endowment as finance chair.
Fox currently is vice chair of the Board of Councilors of the USC Rossier School of Education, a position she has held since fall 2010.
A past president of the Trojan Guild of Los Angeles, Fox also is a member of the Trojan League of South Bay, the San Pedro-Peninsula Norris Cancer Guild and the USC University Hospital Guild. She has served on the USC Alumnae Coordinating Council, an umbrella organization encompassing 19 alumnae groups and is a presidential-level member of USC Associates, the university’s premier support group.
In appreciation for her years of service to her alma mater, Fox received a USC Alumni Service Award in 2006. In 2007, she was honored with USC Rossier’s Recognition of Outstanding Support/Service for Education Award. Established in 1990, the award recognizes those who have helped advance knowledge and practice in the field of education.
Fox lives in Rancho Palos Verdes and is the proud parent of a second-generation Trojan, her son, Chris ’92, a USC volunteer leader currently serving as president of the Trojan Club of San Pedro-Peninsula.
"Town and Gown would like to thank Annette Moore, a very talented writer on the University Staff, who is responsible for the above story. Ms Moore has written several books about the University of Southern California, which are delightful reading materials, particularly to our Trojan Family, and she is on the staff of Trojan Family Magazine.
Thank you again, Annette for your wonderful article on our Carol!!"
